DOC 1: Reading Diversity
DOC 1, "Reading Diversity," is a four-unit course offered every fall quarter.
Course Description
In DOC 1, students practice the critical reading skills necessary to succeed academically through an exploration of the promises and paradoxes in U.S. history, culture, and society. Students read a diverse selection of texts (from historical primary documents to social science theory) to see the many different ways an argument can be presented, supported, and debated. Through sustained analysis of these texts throughout the quarter, students will gain a broad overview of the histories of multiple communities in the U.S., the origins of social stratification and structural inequities, and the movements for social and economic equality.
Prerequisites and Enrollment
Incoming first-year students will be able to enroll in DOC 1 via WebReg during their mid-August enrollment appointments. The prerequisite for DOC 1 is satisfaction of the Entry Level Writing Requirement OR concurrent enrollment in AWP 3. Students who have been placed into AWP 3 ("Analytical Writing") may be enrolled in that course during the same quarter they are enrolled in DOC 1. Students who have been placed into AWP 4A-B ("Analytical Writing and Academic English") will not be able to enroll in DOC 1 until after they have successfully completed those courses and their Academic History shows they have met the Entry Level Writing Requirement.
DOC 1 lectures (meeting type "LE" in the Schedule of Classes) begin Friday of Week “Zero.” DOC 1 discussion sections (meeting type "DI") will meet for the first time Week One. Switching DOC sections may be done via WebReg until Friday afternoon of Week One. Since "switching" discussion sections involves dropping one class and adding another, it can only be done if there is an opening in the class a student wishes to add. In other words, students may not enroll in a class that is already full.
This course is restricted to Thurgood Marshall College students and must be taken for a Letter Grade. Transfer students do not need to take DOC 1. If you have questions about enrolling in DOC, please submit them through New Triton Advising (incoming freshmen) or the Virtual Advising Center (continuing students).

Specific Information for Fall Quarter 2024
Please note that DOC 1 discussion sections listed on the Schedule of Classes with the "building" as RCLAS will meet online only. Students enrolled in these discussion sections will participate synchronously via Zoom, but they are expected to attend lectures in person. Please check your UCSD email regularly for the most recent updates from DOC.
Teaching Assistants will not be assigned to discussion sections until the end of September. Students should enroll in discussion sections that fit their schedules. Enrolled students will be able to access the DOC 1 syllabus and other material on Canvas on the first day of classes. The syllabus can also be found here.
